What is the Melzi Sharps Finder?

The Melzi Sharps Finder is a single-use, FDA-cleared magnetic detector that helps your team find a lost needle or metallic sharp. It works at the table in about two minutes, so the case can keep moving.

How it works:

1. Clear and activate. Pull back instruments and retractors from the area to minimize interference.  Activate the battery by pulling a tab; this triggers audible and visual feedback.
2. Sweep. Start where the team last worked and conduct a systematic search of the surgical area.
3. Decide. The sharp is found, or you can rule it out. The X-ray can be canceled if the item is found.  Document on the EMR.
